Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) (Sweet Basil, Opal Basil, Thai Basil)

Basil is a popular herb grown for its aromatic leaves which are used fresh or dried and used as a spice. A native of central Asia and northwest India, basil is a member of the mint family. Although it is a perennial adapted to warm growing conditions, it is frequently grown as an annual. There are many varieties of basil that differ in aroma, color, plant size, and uses. Sweet basil is the most widely grown basil in Hawaii, and it is used in pesto, tomato dishes, salads, soups, and meat dishes, and used to flavor oil, vinegar, etc. Other commercially grown basil varieties include Opal, Thai, and lemon basil. Basil markets include hotels and restaurants, wholesalers, retailers, and pesto processors.
