Pandanus amaryllifolius is a member of the screw pine family (Pandanaceae). This plant family includes hala (P. tectorius) which is a familiar plant to those living in Hawaii. Pandanus amaryllifolius is mainly grown by farmers of southeast Asian ancestry in Hawaii. Common names include screw pine, bai toey (Thai), and daun pandan (Indonesian). The leaves are used for flavoring rice and sweets.
