HOST: Bird of Paradise: Strelitzia reginae Ait.
TARGETED PEST: Cockerell scale: Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli
(Cooley)

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Efficacy trials were conducted from 18 Oct to 29 Nov 1990 in a 13 acre bird of paradise field located in Hakalau, Hawaii. Plots measured 8 ft by 5 ft with ca 150 plants per plot arranged in a randomized complete block (RCB) with 4 replicates. A 12 ft barrier was provided between plots and a 20 ft buffer zone between the plots and the growers planting. Insecticide sprays were applied to runoff using a compressed air sprayer with a 8004 Teejet nozzle at 40 psi. The spreader sticker, Triton B-1956 was added to all treatments and the control at a rate of 3.0 fl oz/100 gal. Insecticides were applied at 2 week intervals for a total of 3 applications. Ten leaves were randomly sampled from each replicate, 40 per treatment, and observed under a dissecting microscope. The number of live and dead scales were recorded.

RESULTS
All treatments had significantly higher mortality than the control. Pageant DF, Diazinon 50WP and Tempo 2EC were most effective followed by Seven 50WP. Phytotoxicity was not observed on flowers or foliage.
